Showing off Lincoln on a budget
I was recently asked for “my top 10 local places to eat on a cheap-middle range of prices” to take a group of visiting students. Sounds like a great opportunity to write an article for a list of places to show someone coming from out of town without breaking a bank. Challenge accepted. I’ve tried to combine unique experiences you might not find everywhere with Lincoln staples. These are in no particular order, as all are designed to be different enough to show some of Lincoln’s unique flavors and fun locations.
Ivanna Cone
Yeah, I’ve had ice cream for dinner, I’m not ashamed. Ivanna Cone has great ice cream and an awesome location. Get a cone and watch the action in the Haymarket.
Yia Yia’s
Great, unique pizza, great location. Inside or outside there’s a lot to watch while you enjoy a slice. It’s place on O street can be part of an electric atmosphere.
Lazlo’s
This one is probably on the higher end of the price range on this list, but Lazlo’s is enough of a Lincoln staple that it has to be included. The Haymarket itself is a must-do when showing guests a good time, and Lazlo’s is a great start.
Rosari’s
Rosari’s is a food truck on O street, but I’ve been finding myself getting Birria & Pupusas and bringing the back home for an amazing dinner on the deck often.
Heoya
Anyone visiting from out of town needs to try some Korean Fries.
Pepe’s Bistro
Do you want unique? Pepe takes the Vegan concept and cranks out some really good food. I’ve always been impressed with how Pepe combines flavors, one of my favorites, meat or no meat.
Stur 22
I’m not sure I’ve seen quite what Stur 22 does anywhere outside of Lincoln. Their African/Caribbean bowls are unique, great & customizable to suit a variety of tastes.
Bison Witches
Bison Witches location is a go-to for UNL students, or at least it was for me. They have good food, but it will get you downtown next to the Tower Square and city campus. After you’re done, take the opportunity to show your guests UNL’s campus.
Muchachos
Look at the picture, do I need to say more? Muchachos is awesome, and Lincoln agrees (the people love it). Their location is cool too, a must visit.
Tina’s Cafe
Chili and cinnamon rolls are a Lincoln thing, and you probably need to get your guests a taste of this unique combo. My choice is Tina’s with their giant cinnamon rolls.
+1 Runza
This one is probably a duh. But if you have people visiting from outside Nebraska, you need to get a Runza in their hands.
Honorable mention:
Mulberry BBQ: I’ve heard more than one person say it’s the best Brisket north of Texas
Honest Abe’s: Lincoln loves their unique burgers and fun atmosphere.
Isles Pub & Pizza: Yet another great place to get pizza in Lincoln.
Glacial Till Vineyard + (Friday food trucks): great opportunity to get out in the Nebraska countryside and have the option to try a couple of Lincoln’s food trucks and live music. They don’t make the list because it’s built for students, who probably can’t drink. But even if you don’t enjoy their wine, it’s a fun experience.
